Samsung announces Chromebook Pro and Chromebook Plus at CES 2017

NEW DELHI: Samsung announces Chromebook Pro and Chromebook Plus at CES 2017 South Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced its Chromebook Pro and Chromebook Plus at CES 2017. The new Chromebooks from Samsung offer 360-degree rotating touchscreen, built-in digitized pen and a lightweight metal design.

Both the Chromebooks feature a 12.3-inch LED display with 2400×1600 pixel resolution. The devices offer 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. On the connectivity front, they offer 2 USB Type-C ports which support charging, 4K video output, a MicroSD Card Reader, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The company claims that the Chromebooks offer up to 8 hours of battery life.

The only difference between the two devices is of the processor. The Samsung Chromebook Plus is OP1 Hexa-core (Dual A72, Quad A53) processor. On the other hand, the Chromebook Pro is powered by an Intel Core M3 processor.

The Chromebooks flaunt an all metal body and the pen comes with pre-installed Google Keep for notetaking and Samsung ArtCanvas for drawing. The new pen comes with a 0.7mm pen tip and is also pressure sensitive.

The company has not revealed the price of the Chromebook Pro devices but they will go on sale in February this year.

The South Korean giant also showcased its Quantum Dot curved monitor at the event. The monitor comes in 27-inch and 31.5-inch variants.

Both variants have WQHD 2560×1440 pixel resolution, along with 1800R curvature and ultrawide 178-degree viewing angle.

Samsung CH711 flaunts a White-coloured chassis and has a three-sided Boundless design, which the company claims neatly hides all connecting cables.

Along with the CH711, Samsung also displayed three new Quantum Dot curved monitors, including the gaming-centric CFG70 and workplace-focused CF791. The CFG70 was announced back in August this year. However, there is nothing known about the pricing and availability of these.

Intel’s Core i7-7700K is like a son born to a family of blacksmiths in a medieval backwater. It’s a quad-core processor that supports overclocking just like its father, and its father before, and its father before. The lineage can be traced all the way back to the Core i7-2700K, which debuted in late 2011.

Those looking for a significant speed boost will be disappointed, however, and anybody running a sixth-generation i7-6700K will have few reasons to upgrade. Those running third- or fourth-generation Core i7 chips will see a decent increase in performance, though.

So what’s new? At its most basic, this chip has a higher base clock speed thanks to the efficiency gains made possible by the Kaby Lake architecture. Where the 6700K had a base clock speed of 4GHz, the 7700K manages 4.2GHz.

in addition, the maximum Turbo Boost clock speed – which dictates how fast any given core can go – has been increased to 4.5GHz from 4.2GHz in the old model. That’s a decent jump in performance for a processor that has the same 91W TDP (thermal design power) as its predecessor.

Intel Kaby Lake has officially launched. Today at CES 2017 the firm finally spilled its long-awaited beans all over the new specification chips, motherboards and devices that’ll support Kaby Lake. We’ve rounded up everything we know and have served it up in one, comprehensive article.

Kaby Lake, otherwise known as “7th-gen Core” is Intel’s latest lineup of processors. Several laptops launched at the end of 2016 with Kaby Lake chips on board, but today is the first time we’ve seen the full range of desktop and laptop chips all in one place.

INTEL KABY LAKE: WHAT’S NEW?

Kaby Lake is a minor upgrade because Intel has ditched its ‘Tick-Tock’ approach to processor design, meaning there are no major structural changes to the chip or what it’s capable of.

Previously, each generation of Intel processors would see a reduction in process size (smaller, lower power consumption) and then an improvement in architecture (more powerful). This was called Tick-Tock.

Instead of Tick-Tock, Intel has now stretched out the lifespan of a given process size, in this case 14nm (nanometers), to three phases. Its new approach first sees a reduction in process size, then an upgrade to architecture with a final ‘optimisation’ phase added in to make the most of what’s been done so far.

This is bad for fans of big-number upgrades, but obviously great for Intel, which is able to make the most of what has become an increasingly complex process of designing chips.

It also means it’s able to offer up fairly small semi-annual upgrades with brand-new model names, which laptop and desktop manufacturers can use to show off and shift more units.

In the case of this generation of 14nm hardware, 5th-Gen ‘Broadwell’ was the process redesign, Skylake was the architecture redesign (meaning an entirely new socket), with Kaby Lake the last hurrah for 14nm before Intel moves onto ‘Cannonlake’, which will be a 10nm design.

COUGAR QBX Mini-ITX Computer Case Standard ATX PSU originates from Germany and originally specialized in advanced computer peripherals. During the past few months we have looked at several of their high end peripherals and mice. The company however produces more than just keyboards and mice, having diversified towards PC power supply units and cases. Cougar however is not particularly well-known for their cases, even though they have nearly a dozen designs available. One of their most recent releases is the their first Mini-ITX case, the QBX, which was unveiled at Computex and even won a design & innovation show award in the process. This is the case that we will be reviewing today.

Cougar’s marketing is making some very bold claims regarding the performance and capabilities of the QBX. “Powerful Graphics”. “Massive Storage”. “The Best Cooling of Its Class”. And then we notice a $53 price tag, which makes everything sounding a little bit too good to be true. So today we are putting the QBX to the test to see for ourselves where the new case excels and where it falls short.

Based on the Intel Z270 chipset, the Maximus IX Code motherboard features an LGA1151 socket for the latest Intel 7th Generation Core processors. ROG is now as much about premium styling as it is cutting-edge enthusiast and gaming features and incredible overclocking. Like a blacksmith creating a new alloy, the new Code is all about forging these elemental properties together.

Like the Formula series, the Code takes the distinctive ROG Armor and brings it to more PC gamers and enthusiasts who are seeking that unique and premium look in their builds. New AURA Sync lighting adds to its aesthetic appeal, allowing you to match onboard RGB LEDS to AURA RGB equipped components like graphics cards, memory and compatible case lighting – driving it together as a single lighting array. Two AURA RGB 4-pin power headers are included for lighting peripherals.

The IX series also boasts a significantly upgraded SupremeFX audio solution on both the back and front panel, using a combination of new ALC S1220 codec, ESS ES9023 Saber DAC, Nichicon Premium, Japan-made audiophile-grade capacitors, SupremeFX Shielding Technology and Left/Right channel isolation. ASUS exclusive Sonic Studio III and Sonic Radar II is also included.

Dual PCI-Express Gen-3 4x NVMe M.2 storage interfaces (look at the bottom right: one pokes out at 90-degrees!) can power some seriously fast RAID-0 M.2 SSD setups, although if you still have a SATA-based M.2 SSD the primary port still supports SATA mode, allowing both PCI-E and SATA M.2 devices together on one board.

Networking is handled by 802.11ac 2T2R Wi-Fi with MU-M

IMO, Bluetooth 4.1, and Intel i219-V Gigabit networking with LANGuard port, along with ASUS’ latest GameFirst IV software.

There’s a metric ton of USB ports to choose from, with USB 3.1 Type-C that can deliver power up to 15W of power, driving a whole new metric of potential peripherals.

Up to 64GB of DDR4 with XMP 2.0 is supported, with overclocked speeds accepted as fast as you can push those DIMMs. The DIMMS plug into a 3rd generation of T-Topology design within the PCB itself. Below, the two armored PCI-Express 16x slots support SLI and CrossFire dual-GPU (in 8x8x configuration), with a third 16x slot (4x bandwidth – 3-way CrossFireX supported), and a few 1x slots for peripherals.

For overclocking, as usual you can expect the best from ROG. The acclaimed Extreme Engine DIGI+ controls 8-phases of digitally powered NexFET MOSFET, microfine alloy chokes and 10K black metallic caps. Meanwhile the processor graphics and DDR4 DRAM receive two phase power each.

Within the ROG UEFI BIOS it continues leading the way with cutting edge options including new ‘Pro-Clock’ base-clock tweaking for the experienced enthusiast, but also, on the other hand there’s also a wizard process for quick and simple OC and RAID setup.

Where ROG was the first to introduce the dedicated water-pump header, water-cooling enthusiasts have got another benefit with the addition of water-cooling temperature and flow sensing headers, two pump power headers and a high-amp fan header. These are in addition to the five other fan headers (that support both PWM and DC modes) and the Fan Extension Card that can add three more fan headers. All this is controlled by ASUS’ Fan Xpert 4 software.

Intel Core i5-7600K, a comparatively high-end member of the 7th Gen Kaby Lake family, which sits just below the new flagship Intel Core i7-7700. But with Intel going for refinement during this processor release, rather than reinvention, is it worth buying into this latest generation of CPU? For this review we take a look at the performance of the Intel i5-7600K processor in a wide variety of benchmarks, including a look at some of the latest AAA game releases, to see what pushes this Kaby Lake 7600K to its FPS limit.

What is Kaby Lake?

While we’re still facing an interminable wait for AMD’s Zen CPU generation, Intel has struck out with yet another generation of processors. This time around it’s the seventh generation Intel Kaby Lake, the successor to 2016’s Skylake.

With Intel’s move away from its usual Tick Tock cadence, Kaby Lake is the first time we will see Process > Architecture > Optimization in action. Broadwell was the new 14nm process, Skylake introduced the new architecture, while Kaby Lake is the optimization of this process and architecture, a refinement of both as a stop gap to the 10nm process, delivering improved performance for a lower TDP.

Just like Skylake, Kaby Lake is Socket 1151 and compatible with the Z170/Z270/h170 range of motherboards

Intel Core i5-7600K

The Intel Core i5-7600K is a quad core processor with four threads, clocked at 3.8GHz Core Clock and 4.2GHz Boost Clock. It has a 6MB L3 Cache, 91W TDP, and a release price tag of $289. Ah, and the ‘K’ suffix means this particular Kaby Lake CPU is unlocked and ready for overclocking. Intel makes the assumption if you’re buying this that you’re going to overclock it, so there is no stock cooler included with the Core i5-7600K, as it just wouldn’t cut it.

As you can probably tell from the specs, and the fact that the Core i5-7600K is neither a die shrink nor an architectural change, this is very much an overcharged version of Core i5-6600K from last year. I will make this clear – if you have a Skylake CPU, there really is no point in upgrading to Kaby Lake, there really are too few benefits to justify the cost. If you are opting for a brand new system however, you may as well jump in at the latest and (almost) greatest. This is a relatively affordable yet high-end CPU which is going to have zero issues playing the most demanding games of today (except H1Z1: King of the Kill, I suspect).

Intel Core i5-7600K Benchmarks

Unfortunately we haven’t got our hands on the previous generation Core i5-6600K for a direct comparison, but we’ve gone a little further back and stacked up Intel’s i5-7600K against the older Haswell-E (Extreme) Intel Core i7-5820K, which we feel represents a slightly better point in time when considering hardware upgrade time. So the i7-5820K CPU is a little older, launching at the tail end of 2014, but it was an extremely high-end processor at the time, setting you back somewhere in the region of $380, compared to $289 for the i5-7600K.
